Emigrated to America from Austria, Hungaryon December 31, 1909 at theage of 11. The Trip took about 3 1/2 weeks on the ship Garonia, oneof 3 sister ships that left from Italy. It docked at Ellis Island butthey were not allowed to disembark on New Year's Day. She arrived inBurnham, PA on January 6th, 1910. Lived in Burnham, PA until marriageto Henry Iwankovitsch in Detroit, MI. Henry came to Burnham to meetMarie in December and spent the holidays with her family. He gaveMarie a diamond ring at the train station before he left. They weremarried in a double wedding with Charles and Elizabeth on january 24in Detroit, MI. Elizabeth was Henry's sister. Came from the city ofNysatz, Nyfutog, Novistad? Serbians lived there. Marie and family,also Henry Meyer's family lived in a German settlement there. Locatedon the Danube.
Franklin Iwankovitsch, 78 of Grosse Pointe Woods died peacefully onJune 2, 2011 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. Frank was bornon March 6, 1933 in Detroit, the son of Henry and Mary Iwankovitsch.Frank was a graduate of St. Anthony High School in Detroit and grew upon Detroit's eastside until his family moved to Grosse Pointe Woods.Frank has lived in the same house for the last 57 years.
After graduation he began work at General Motors as a machinerepairman. From April 1953 to April 1955 he served his country in theUnited States Army. After his service he went back to GM and retiredin 1986 after 33 years of service.
Frank was a very generous man. He enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzlesand was known to his family and friends as Mr. Fix-it because he couldrepair anything. Frank was very proud of his family and liked to haveeveryone over to his home for the holidays and other specialoccasions. He was passionate about High-Balls and was ready to makeone regardless of the time of day–"It's twelve o'clock somewhere!" hewould say. His pride and joy was his 1967 Grand Prix convertible thathe would drive along Lakeshore Road. When asked if it was for sale,the standard answer was, "You can't afford it."
Frank was one of eleven siblings and is survived by four sisters,Helen Blind, Marian Easley, Rose Ferreri and Nancy Mitchell. He wasthe cherished uncle of James Iwankovitsch (Angela) and numerous othernieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday atthe A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road inGrosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited on Sunday eveningat 7:00 o'clock. His body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc CatholicChurch, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores from 9:30a.m. Monday until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Msgr. G. Michael Bugarinwill officiate. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery inClinton Township.
He was previously married to a woman with the last name Willard.
