Thomas - 31 --------- Sicken - 28 --------- VanSickle - 30 --------- Lewton - 29 |
7/3 (SAT) The Thomass left first for River Road RV Park & Campground . It is in the Porcupine Mountains of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Ontonagon. The roads were a hot mess once we crossed into the UP. The main road into Ontonagon was blocked by construction and we were all detoured down to Rockland and then back up to Ontonagon. The sites are incredibly freakin small and the lady who is running the campground out of her living room says that it is the camper manufacturers fault and not theirs. The Thomass slide out is between the posts for water and sewer. Marias camper is awning is right over the bathroom door of the Thomass camper. There is a laundry and bath house, a rustic playground (metal merry-go-round, slide and two swings). There is a rumor stating that there is supposed to be wi-fi, but no one can find/connect to it! But being so close to town we do have cell service and therefore, internet. The fire rings are moveable, and they have river access for fishing. John, Tracey, and Johnny Martinelli showed up at camp but are staying at a rental home in Rockland. The sun was still out at 10:30pm!! It was totally crazy! Tooth Update: Still really sore, medicating every 4 hours.
7/4 (SUN) Josh made breakfast burgers in the morning. The Thomass went to the beach with the dogs while everyone else did something different. Sophie and Holly loved playing and swimming in the water with Josh, Joey, and Ellie. Jeani did not swim as the water was too cold for her. Jay & Kelly, Matt & Amy and the Martinellis all went riding. Maria bumped her head on Jays King Pin later in the day and cut her head. Jeani, Kevin and Kelly all tended to her wound which bled fairly good but wasnt bad enough for stitches. Occasionally we would get a nice breeze through the campsites and one particular breeze was strong enough to lift the Thomass canopy. Jeani had to run over and hold it down while Josh staked the feet into the ground! It was really hot, and the weather really took it out of everybody. Again, the sun didnt set until after 10pm again. It is really weird that we dont start the campfire until almost 11pm! Ellie, Jeani, Amy, and Kelly all made Jello shots. Johnny and Tracy challenged Josh and Kelly to Euchre where they got a solid trouncing! Tooth Update: Getting better, only medicating every 7-8 hours with Ibuprofen.
7/5 (MON) Warm day today. Fend for ourselves breakfasts. Matt & Amy with John & Tracy all went golfing while the Thomass went to visit the Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. It was a nice 25 minute drive to the parking lot and a smooth 300 walk up a paved path to the overlook. The view was beautiful! They stopped at the State Park camp store and bought ice cream for themselves and Josh gave some of his to Sophie and Holly! The rest of the guys went golfing. Amy and Kelly did laundry while Josh napped in the afternoon. Some of us received air quality alerts about smoke from Canadian wildfires in the afternoon. Again, the sun set after 10pm and we are still reeling. Once the sun sets, the mosquitos come out, in force! The jello shots came out tonight. Euchre Rematch: Johnny and Tracy soundly beat the champions this night. Tooth Update: Hurts bad today. I think I clenched my jaw overnight.
7/6 (TUE) Rain out! The day started out gloomy and cold. Jay, Matt, and Josh were all watching the weather radar and there was a HUGE storm system over Minnesota and Wisconsin that was tracking straight towards us. It hit just after breakfast, of which Kevin made bacon and pancakes. Everyone pretty much just stayed in. The Thomass played CLUE and slept. After lunch time, Josh, Matt, and Jay all sat under Jays awning and talked about Megadeth and Metallica and watched videos on Matts phone. For dinner, it was Seafood Gumbo. Crab legs, lobster tail, shrimps, scallops, corn, red skin potatoes, polish sausage and hotdogs along with various seasonings. Joey said it tasted good! Josh, Ellie, and Jeani all had pork chops and leftover pasta salads. Tooth update: Still achy and alternating Ibuprofen with Acetaminophen. Can barely open mouth to eat, jaw is really sore on right side.
7/7 (WED) Keweenaw Day! Fend for selfs breakfasts! Sickens and Martinellis met up with Gregg and Eddie and tooled around some trails at a brisk 2mph! Maria and Kevin dealt with a very minor leak that Kevin blew up into the fucking sinking of the Titanic! He did NOT hookup his pressure regulator on his water line and may have blown a line. He thinks it is a bad 1973 Shasta ball valve and wants to find a place to replace the EXACT FUCKING PART! *sigh. The Thomass and VanSickles all travelled to Houghton/Hancock and saw the lift bridge and then off to Centennial to meet with Aunt Andrea and Grandma Blind. They dropped off Maria and headed off to Copper Harbor! The drive was super fun for Ellie and Josh, but not everyone else. They stopped at the Genny Store and grabbed snacks then headed out to the end of US41 and beyond! They tried to find the old NASA weather rocket launch site, but the trails and logging roads proved too much for Joshs truck. On they way back to camp they stopped at the old Quincy Mine Shaft #2 and took a mine tour! Ellie and Joey really had a good time. Everyone had to wear hard hats and got a guided tour of the adit that gave them access to level 7. All of the remaining levels 8-92 were flooded. The shaft goes down 9600 and we only saw the first 300! It was a balmy 43F in the adit and very wet. Still really cool though! Afterwards they stopped at a Walmart for supplies and then a Festival Foods (grocery/ACO hardware) for parts to Kevins camper. Then back to camp at breakneck speeds for dinner, Marias famous spaghetti. Tracy and Johnny challenged Josh and Kelly to a tie breaker in Euchre. Josh called trump almost every time and it was almost a complete washout for the Martinellis! It got too dark to continue the competition, so it was suspended until tomorrow. The current score for that game was 5-2 in favor of the Martinellis. Tooth Update: Not too bad today, still sore, and only taking 800mg of Ibuprofen every 6-8hrs.
7/8 (THU) Sickens are on breakfast today. Breakfast burritos. Josh took Joey to get his fishing license, neon green worms and some new tackle. Came back to find out that a can of Mango Pepsi had exploded in the camper and sprayed the wall and ceiling in the Thomass camper! It had been in a case of pop next to the furnace vent, and it just blew! The Sickens with Sammy, The Lewtons and the Martinellis all went riding down in Rockland. The Thomass with Sophie and Holly went down to Bond Falls in Bruce Crossing. It was a tough hike even though Josh said his app, ALLTRAILS said it was a moderate hike with some ups and downs. The boulders and ravines were pretty intense, but the falls were beautiful. They stopped at the lighthouse near camp and Jeani, Ellie, and Josh all walked around it while Joey waited in the truck with the dogs. It was decommissioned in 1964 and last used in 1866, having been built in 1814. The Thomass came back to camp with Pizza from Syls in town. Surprisingly good, but second pizza was burnt. Still better than Little Caesars. Joey and Josh walked out onto the old railroad trestle to fish in the Ontonagon River, then moved to the marina, but did not even get a nibble. Too murky and not the right gear. Euchre continued: Josh and Kelly trounced Johnny and Tracy again. But it was in good fun. Tooth Update: Not too bad only had to medicate twice. Once in the morning and once before bed.
7/9 (FRI) Josh and Joey got up really early and went fishing at the quarry place just outside of Rockland. They were the only two people there and the lake was steaming/foggy. There were several ravens about, and they screamed like goats! It was super funny. Josh caught 16 fish, all perch, while Joey caught 18 fish, mostly perch, but some blue gill and one sun fish. Joey caught the most fish and the biggest fish! Way to go Joey! They went through all dozen of the green crawlers by 11:30am. Only 3 people ever showed up, so they had the whole place to themselves. After they got back, everyone went to Presque Isle Falls DEEP in the Porcupine Mountains State Park. 25 miles to be exact. What a drive! Twisty and Turney and slow! The Thomass with Sophie and Holly only saw the JeffBezhos and Nintendo falls (Manabezho and Manido) falls, on the Presque Isle River. They skipped the last set of waterfalls, the Nawadaha Falls. Too many steps and hills and they are all tired. The Lewtons brought Jax and Jill while the Sickens brought Sammy and Monster, then Kevin brought Max. The Thomass could hear Jax and Jill barking at EVERY dog that came near.
7/10 (SAT) Heading home from the Porkies all in one go! ETD 7am. Actual 7:38am |
